What is kinesio tape?
Kinesiology tape or kinesio tape is a specialized elastic “athletic tape” that was popularized during the 2008 Olympics.
According to The Kinesio Taping Association International, “The Kinesio Taping® Method is a definitive rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong the benefits of manual therapy administered within the clinical setting.”Used in combination with other treatments, this tape successfully treats a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and other medical conditions.
Can kinesio tape help treat headaches?
Misaligned joints in the spine are a common cause of headaches. Easily identified by checking for restricted movement in the neck. Most people suffering from a cervicogenic headache can tell if they have this type because they instinctively rub the back of the neck or head. When it comes to cervicogenic headaches, which can easily trigger migraine headaches when untreated, the goal is to restore the proper biomechanics of the neck.
At the Migraine Relief Chiropractic Center, kinesio tape may be applied after a chiropractic adjustment, stretched across the affected area in the neck to support the head and take pressure off the affected muscles helping them relax and maintain the corrected spinal alignment. Kinesio tape not only helps patients hold their adjustments longer, but it directly impacts the headache by helping reduce head pain by repositioning muscles under stress and relieving tension in the neck.
